Choosing your courses

It is important to think carefully about your course choice for your sixth form years. Maybe you already have an idea of the kind of career you wish to pursue at 18. Perhaps you have in mind a university course or apprenticeship programme. If so, you need to ensure that you choose the courses which support your plans. If you are in doubt or require any guidance you can talk to Mrs Valentine (hvalentine@sackvilleschool.org.uk) in the sixth form area, Mrs Bush (mbush@sackvilleschool.org.uk), our University Transition Leader or Mrs Smith (hsmith@sackvilleschool.org.uk), our Careers Leader.

To join us at Sackville for level 3 study (A level or equivalent) you need a minimum of five GCSEs/Level 2 vocational course at grade 4 or higher, including English and Maths. A levels are traditional academic qualifications. Vocational qualifications are focused on particular activities such as Business, ICT and Media. They are assessed with extended tasks of the kind likely to be met in the world of work, and some written exams. Some courses have specific entry guidelines of their own. It is possible to mix traditional and vocational qualifications. Our students take one of these pathways, set out below:

    • Pathway 1: Four A levels including Maths / Further Maths
    • Pathway 2: Three A levels
    • Pathway 3 Two A levels + one vocational or one A level + two vocational subjects
    • Pathway 4: One year level 2 access, to include level 2 Maths and English retake plus Child Development or Travel and Tourism

Students who do not achieve the level 2 threshold of five GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 or above are required to study the level 2 access course.

Any student who does not achieve a grade 4 in English or Maths will be required to study the subject again.

If students have additional educational needs please contact Mrs Hunt (SENDCo), to discuss their post-16 studies shunt@sackvilleschool.org.uk.

Sixth form teaching can take place during lesson 6 (3-4pm).
