Course description

The two year A level course allows students to develop their language skills to a very high level as well as exploring the culture, current issues and trends in countries where French, German or Spanish are spoken. We will also study a film and a literary text in the chosen language. In addition students choose an area of interest to them for an individual research project.

Groups have specialist, experienced A level teachers and weekly timetabled sessions with the foreign language assistant.

German students have the opportunity to take part in a study visit to an engineering college in Hamburg, and Spanish students will be invited to take part in a work experience visit to Madrid. French students can carry out work experience in our twin town Bourg-de Péage.

Course units

Social issues – for example immigration and diversity in multi-ethnic societies,
Current trends – for instance the changing nature of family in today’s world, equal rights
Artistic culture – including cinema and music, regional traditions and cultural heritage
Political life – such as the right to vote, dictatorships, popular movements
The in-depth study of a film and a book in the target language
An individual research project on a topic of your choice
Grammar and language skills will be developed as these topics are studied.

Assessment

Students will sit three A level exams. The listening and reading paper covers the aspects of society that have been studied and the writing paper assesses knowledge of the book and the film. The speaking exam, taken with their classroom teacher, allows the students to present and discuss their individual research project and also to respond to a stimulus card related to the themes that have been studied.

Progress will be regularly assessed throughout the course through internal exams and assessments.
